Independent research supported by meetings (normally 5) with supervisor.

One dissertation of no less than 12,000 words and no more than 15,000 words.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ develop and enhance students' personal research interest in and their knowledge of their chosen topic within subject areas relevant to creative industries and cultural policy;

■ develop students' engagement with other scholarly, critical, theoretical or applied research work relevant to the subject area;

■ encourage the successful application of knowledge and skills acquired throughout the programme within a substantial piece of original research.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to

■ define, plan and execute a sustained, focused, coherent and original research project in an area relevant to creative industries and cultural policy

■ source, select and critically evaluate appropriate primary and secondary sources in their chosen subject area and then utilise such sources effectively within the final dissertation;

■ develop substantial, detailed and analytical first-hand knowledge of their chosen area of investigation, and explain this with reference to relevant theoretical concepts and frameworks;

■ work independently;

■ utilise appropriate academic conventions with regard to referencing and provision of bibliographic information;

■ execute a substantial piece of written work in clear and appropriate academic English.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
