Dr Emily Long

Biography

Dr. Emily Long is a Research Fellow in the Social Relationships and Health Improvement programme in the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit (SPHSU). She previously held a MRC Skills Development Fellowship from 2018-2021 through the College of Social Sciences and SPHSU.

Emily holds a PhD in Psychology, with an emphasis on sociobehavioral epidemiology, from Utah State University. 

 

Research interests

My research related to social networks includes projects related to:

1. The mechanisms through which social relationships impact health outcomes (e.g., substance use, mental health)

2. The extent to which health influences the structure of social networks

3. Social network interventions and leveraging social relationships in behaviour change programs

My research related to loneliness among young people includes projects related to:

1. Identifying individual, social, and community risk factors for loneliness

2. Multilevel analysis of variation in loneliness

3. The dynamics between loneliness and mental health

4. Associations between social isolation and loneliness

5. Implications of loneliness on wellbeing
